Hiring the best person for the job

Ok, now that you are familiar as to where the interview process fits into the hiring process, lets have a look at some of the things you should consider during the interview.

What TO DO during the interview process

  1. Prepare the interview in advance
    • Make sure you are well prepared for the interview. Don’t waste your businesses and the applicant’s time by thinking of questions during the interview process
    • Know the requirement of the job. Review the job description
    • Have prepare a list of standard questions regarding the applicants ability to do the work outlined on the job description
    • Make sure you have looked through the candidates resumes
    • Set and specific appointment time and the time limit the interview should go for.

  2. Collect Pertinent Information During the Interview
    • Don’t give too much information away. You do not want the candidate to formulate answers. Don’t put words into his/her mouth. Let them impress you.
    • Ask questions that relates to the candidates past performances. For example if the past job was an secretary, a job that requires high organization skills, ask the applicant “how he/she keeps up with all the schedules”
    • Ask specific questions that the candidate may face. For example how they will handle a few unhappy customers.
    • Listen carefully about how well the candidate is answering the questions being asked and also take note of the applicants tone of voice, are they answering the questions clearly?

  3. Look professional during the interview
    • Don’t be late for an interview
    • Don’t look as though you are bored or fatigue
    • Setup a business-like atmosphere

  4. Treat all applicants fairly
    • Don’t ask discriminating questions
    • Don’t be racist

  5. Facilitate open communication
    • Try to create a rapport with the applicant, use his/her name. Ask them about their previous jobs
    • Don’t dominate the discussions. Experts believe in the 20/80 rule where you talk for 20% and the candidate talks for 80%
    • Listen carefully to the applicants answers.
